So, as of about 6 hours ago, I've had my iPhone for a week now. I figured I'd post my usages so far, my likes and dislikes, etc.

Check after the jump for details.

Battery:

I had the phone charged to 100% around 9:30am. With some light to moderate usage ( it recorded 2 hrs of usages and 10 hours of standby ) it shows a battery of 57% left. That was mostly spent fiddling around with different apps, posting a few things on facebook, exploring a bit on the web and a considerable amount of text messaging. With 12 hours passed and still 1/2 the battery, I'm pretty happy so far. I'm going to leave it over night to see how far down I can get it and use my Incase Power Slider tomorrow while I'm at Brooke's for most the day. Overall I'm pretty pleased with the battery life, and watching it take nearly a full day of moderate usage to drain.

Keyboard:

I'm still getting used to the auto-correcting of the keyboard. It's fairly difficult for me to not want to instantly go back to fix a mistake I notice. I know I'm getting better at typing on it, but I don't think I'll ever have the accuracy of typing on a real keyboard and when I'm texting I am losing my signature *action_here* because the asterisk symbol is just difficult to get to.

Ringtones:

I have a hard time being willing to pay for ringtones, especially when I have already paid for songs or entire ablums. I've found it quite easy to make ringtones to put on my iPhone and have a few custom ones already. The hard part if finding the right ringtone for the right person.

Applications:

This is both the biggest strength and the greatest weakness of the iPhone. Apple has done a wonderful job making it easy to make applications for the iPhone. What they haven't made easy is getting the application approved for sale in the store. The approval process is cloaked in mystery and now, any application that pulls data from the internet ( think like a browser ) will be tagged 17+ and that it may contain indecent material. I wonder if the Barnes and Noble app was tagged that way, or if companies have enough pull they can get Apple to look the other way ( like how Trent Reznor got his app approval re-evaluated when it was initially declined with some very harsh posts on twitter and his own website ).

If you ignore the approval process though, the App Store is an amazing source of fun. It's almost like YouTube, where you can start searching for something and suddenly find yourself having spent an hour or two just looking at nothing. People will mock the Apple App Store for having a pletora of Fart Apps, but when you really dig into it, there are a lot of very worth while applications, not all of which cost money, many very solid apps are free.

Mail:

I never thought I would use email on a phone as much as I have in the last week. I only have it checking mail every 15 minutes and I could probably drop that down to 30 minutes if I wanted to save the battery a bit more, but as I'm not hurting for battery I'm not all that worried. The email client ( while not perfect ) is VERY usable, and I'm quite pleased with it's implementation.
What's Lacking:

I do wish the iPhone had some kind of LED that could blink, or flash or something when there was something that "required" your attention ( which could be modified by preferences ). I'd like to know when I have an unread sms, or missed call, or voicemail, while I don't need to know immediately about IMs or emails for example. While the phone does vibrate or chirp when a message comes in, it only does so three times ( once for the inital alert and then twice more over the course of a few minutes ) and after that you aren't alerted again. If I'm in the shower, chances are I'm going to miss this, and I'd really like the ability to glance at my phone from across the room and know if I have something that requires my attention.

The phone could use a flash, but it's far from a real need for me. If I'm going to take that many pictures I'll get my digital camera out.

Syncing to multiple computers. Like most people, I have a computer at work and at home. While I don't need, nor even WANT to sync my music/videos at home and work, I DO have the want to sync my contacts, applications, calendars, ringtones, etc between the two. I'd love to have a backup of my sync'd information at work in case my home machine dies ( or vice versa ). I spend between 40 and 50 hours on a normal week at the office, which is about 1/3 to 1/4 of the total hours in a calendar week. That's a lot of time. I'd really like the option to sync against 2 computers.

Profiles. I'd like to be able to set different profiles for my phone. When I have it plugged in, I don't care if the screen is at it's brightest vs my normal dimmer setting for saving battery consumption. I do like the vibrate switch on the side, making it VERY easy to turn the phone silent, but I'd also like the option for NO vibration that easily too.

Settings easier to get access. This is one thing that can be a pain. When I need to toggle my bluetooth on/off it takes no less than 4 taps, and that's being generous and assuming the phone is not asleep and/or locked.

A Today Screen. On the lock screen I would love to have a brief over view of things on my device. Appointments I have today and perhaps coming up in the next day or two, number of missed calls or voicemails, number of missed text messages, number of unread emails. It would be quite nice to just turn on the screen, give it a quick look over and see if I really needed to swipe to unlock or could just turn the screen off and go back to whatever I was doing.

While I have gone on about things I think that the iPhone is lacking, that by NO means is to give the impression that I do not really like the phone. I've been VERY pleased with my coverage, my speed and the general quality of the phone.

My iPhone experience to date has been a little bitter sweet. Overall I really like the device. While there are things I'd change about it, I can't think of a device I would immediately change it for.

That being said, I had a problem with my iPhone where the camera app would lock up the phone, some times. This wouldn't happen ALL the time, nor would it happen all that often ( think 2 twice a day...maybe...since I bought it on 7/11/09 ). So, I walked into an Apple store last week to talk to a associate to see what they could think of. They tried a normal restart and told me to do a new phone restore ( losing all my data, but being able to resync apps, contacts, etc ), and that if that didn't work to schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar, where customers get 1 on 1 help with their Apple products.

So, I went home and did a full restore, resyncing contacts and adding pictures back again, etc. A few hours later it happened again, and I made my appointment for Wednesday evening, one of the few times Brooke and I weren't scheduled to be together this week. I ended ups staying home sick from work and Brooke came over to see how I was doing, we relaxed and talked and she was tired from work so she stayed at the house while I went to the Sherman Oaks Apple store. I wish I could remember the name of the guy that helped me at the Genius Bar, but he was very straight forward with me, telling me that since it's before 2 weeks I can just straight up exchange the phone for a new one, no questions asked. I said go for it and he started to go through the motions when he said "uh oh". They were out of 32GB White iPhones. Ugh. He said that he could order one for me but it would take about 3 days to get there, and by that time I'd be out of the Valley and back in Agoura. He said in that case to go to any store that had them in and just tell them I wanted to do an "in box exchange".

Thursday, I was home from work again, still sick, and while I checked the iPhone Inventory tool, no stores near by had any White 32 GB 3GS iPhones. I figured I would just wait until Friday and go to one of the Apple stores on my way between work and my sister's house. As I was at work on Friday, I kept checking the Invetory Tool. Thousand Oaks, Simi Valley, Canoga Park, Northridge and Sherman Oaks were all out of stock of the White 32GB 3GS. Wow, and here I thought I went with the less popular color. Around 11am rolls around and low and behold Thousand Oaks has them in stock! Yes! I plan on stopping by there on my way to my sisters and swapping out my iPhone. By 3:30pm the Thousand Oaks store was showing 0 in stock. D'oh. I should have take a lunch. Around 4:30 I check the site again and find that Northridge has it in stock. I don't hold my breath but figure if they still have them in stock by the time I go to my sisters, take care of the dogs and am ready to leave, I'll stop by and see what they can do for me.

After taking care of the raft killing beasts, I check the Inventory Tool one last time and it says they are still in stock, so I head over to the Northridge mall. I find my way over to the Apple store to find the store PACKED with people. There are easily over 100 people in the store, with 20 people in queue for the Genius Bar, and here I thought I might be the one and only person out looking for an iPhone on a Friday night. Seems I was QUITE wrong. I finally flag down a power blue t-shirt wearing associate and tell him my story. He listens and tells me he needs to talk to a Genius. He gets flagged down by 4 or 5 other customers just walking to the Genius Bar, and this guy is way too nice to tell someone he's helping someone else so he listens to them and tries to point them in the right direction before continuing on his way. In the mean time I see another gentleman standing in the iPhone line who buys 4 ( yes FOUR ) White 32GB iPhone 3GS'. My mind starts to race. What if he got the last ones? The associate comes back to me and tells me it will be fine to swap it out and asks which one I have. I tell him the White 3GS. He nods, no problem. What size? I say 32GB. He says "Now that might be a problem." I see him walk over to the iPhone checkout and he grabs one of the 2 last white iPhones. He double checks to make sure it's a 32GB one and he comes back to me telling me I'm pretty lucky and had I showed up any longer I might have been out of luck. Mel helped me throughout the rest of the exchange, making sure the new phone had my proper phone number, was able to make and receive calls and was activated through iTunes in the store. If Mel ever reads this, and I know I thanked him in the store, I just want him to know how nice he made my Apple experience and while I hate having technology not work like ti should, he made the repair process as enjoyable as it could be. While it did take a while and I didn't leave the Apple store until about 8pm, I was quite satisfied and was ready to go home with my new iPhone and apply my new InvisibleShield screen protector. I'll have a review on that before too long.

For the most part I'm loving my Pre, it almost feels like an iPhone with a keyboard, and Palm is onto something with WebOS. That being said, there are a few things that have been annoying me. I think most (all?) of these can be fixed through software updates, so get on it Palm.

1. Battery Life - Even after turning off GPS, AIM, auto-checking email, and with some light use, I'm down 12% after 2 hours. Hopefully they can fix this, if not, I'll just have to carry a charger around with me wherever I go. Good thing I don't use my phone as an MP3 player, just saying.

2. Bluetooth pairing with car - For whatever reason, whenever I receive a phone call while in my car, the phone initially uses the bluetooth, then switches to normal (handset) mode. I have to then manually select the bluetooth icon from the phone screen while the person on the other end talks and hopefully doesn't say anything important.

3. Copy and Paste - A couple of things here. First off, you can't copy and paste from an html web page nor from an incoming text message, only from areas that are deemed text input fields. This makes it annoying to copy something (an address, for example) from a text message and put it into Google Maps. The other aspect is that even when you can select the text, it's tricky. You have to hold down the [CAPS] (up arrow) button and swipe over the text. Only problem is that the swipe action doesn't seem too sensitive and even then it doesn't span multiple lines. You have to swipe one line, probably a couple times, then swipe the previous line. Rinse and Repeat. To actually copy the text, you hold your finger in the gesture area and then hit v, c, or x, depending on what you're trying to do. I found out the hard way that the alt [Orange] button does not in fact copy, nor is there a dropdown menu button like the Centro or Treo. Because your finger must remain in the gesture area, it's very difficult to copy and paste one-handed Maybe I just need to get used to this one, but it hasn't been an easy transition.

Anyway, minor transitional/new software issues, just wanted to give an update of my Palm Pre sojourn.

The reason I made the appointment is that occassionally my iPhone will totally lock up, specifically when using the camera app. The shutter just never opens, and I've even left it there for 5 full minutes. I did a phone restore to see how that would work out, but low and behold it happened again. Here's hoping that the person that helps me at the Genius Bar can really help me out. I've already backed up all my data, just in case they do a phone swap. I'll post more here after my appointment at 7:45pm tonight.

So, I didn't really plan on getting the iPhone this weekend. It just kind of happened. Perhaps I should explain.

This was going to be a VERY busy weekend for me. As of Friday ( 7/9/09 ) I am to be house & dog sitting for my sister while she is out of town until 7/16/09. I tweaked my back on Friday morning, but still headed to work, though sitting, walking and even breathing deeply hurt. I stayed until about 1pm when I just couldn't take the pain anymore and headed home. I hadn't planned on getting to my sister's house until 6pm or so anyways, so I decided to try to go sleep off some of the pain of my back. I slept for about 2 hours, though that really didn't effect the pain. I dragged my bags to my car, somehow managed to not pass out from the pain and drove to my sisters house at about 4:30.

I got to her house and settled in, taking some more Advil for my back, still not really helping though. I went to call Brooke to tell her I had gotten to my sisters, but found my phone had no service. So, I went wandering from room to room in the house trying to get service. A restart of the phone got me 1 bar, but enough to send a few text messages before losing service again and needing a restart yet again. I was pretty flustered and realized if I was going to be in my sisters house the entire next week I needed more reliable service. I talked to my sister on the phone ( standing next to 1 window in the guest bedroom keeps service at 2 bars for whatever reason ) and she told me that this area of Encino was just a black whole for Tmobile service, and she told me to use the house phone if I needed anything. Brooke showed up around 6:30 and we went to Gelson's and Ralphs markets to pick up food and booze for BBQ we were having late Saturday afternoon. I was still in some major pain and Brooke and I decided to have some rotisserie chicken, cheese and crackers for dinner. With my back still in pain and the fact we had to be in Moorpark at 9am to see some condos, we went to bed pretty early.

We got up around 7:15 and were on the road at 8:00am. We had to drop off some bean dip I made for my brother for a party he was having for his best friend's birthday. After dropping off the food I had made, we picked up the cooler and headed to Moorpark. We were there a few minutes early but my realtor pulled up right at the same time we did. We pulled into the condo complex and started looking at the 3 places there that were on the market.

All of the units had the same floor plan, 3 bedrooms 2 baths. 2 of the bedrooms were pretty small, enough for a full bed and a dresser, but that's about it, where the master bed was bigger and had and attached bathroom.

The first unit on the ground floor ( each building had 4 units within it, 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs, but the way they overlap it is done in such a way where the noise from surrounding neighbors is minimal ), and definitely needed some work. The carpet would have had to be replaced as would be the blinds. The walls needed a repainting and the counters in the kitchen could be redone ( though not necessary ), and the entire place needed a REAL good cleaning. The location I really liked. It was VERY close to the pool and there was grass areas right outside the door which would have been great for Jack ( my dog ).

The 2nd unit was an upstairs until, right above the garages for all 4 units. This unfortunately left a noticeable amount of noise from doors opening and closing, but not so much you'd drive yourself crazy. The kitchen had very nice granite counters and stone backsplashes. The paint was a nice clean white too. The bathroom was done in the same fashion as the kitchen. The unit was in very good shape.

The 3rd and final unit took some searching to find, as it was tucked around a corner and not labeled very well. The place had been recently painted, new carpets and fixtures. The kitchen could have used some work, but the unit was quite nice. It was also upstairs. The unit was in escrow but had fallen through, so all the work had been done on it to get it move in ready.

The downsides of the units: The first unit we found was taken off the market because it was in escrow, but there was some more information the listing agent could give out yet, and my realtor was going to try to pull the info out of him. The 2nd unit was a short sale, and had a number of offers already on it. The 3rd unit was NOT approved for an FHA loan. I put a call into my loan officer to see what kind of normal loan I could get preapproved for, but as it was a Saturday morning I don't expect to hear back from him until Monday evening. Before leaving we gave Brooke's number to my realtor since my service was really bad though Brooke's service ( ATT ) was rocking full bars.

Brooke and I got back to my sisters and it was about 10am. I helped her get food ready for the BBQ and by 1pm we had everything ready to go and nothing much left on tap but to sit and wait. Dana ( the owner of this site ) sent me a text asking when I was getting a new phone ( if you saw one of my previous posts you know I had decided to get the new iPhone a few months back ). I told him I didn't have time today with people coming and that I'd do it on Sunday. Brooke asked what we were talking about and I recounted the conversation for her. She paused a moment and said "We're all ready here, why don't you just go get it now? I'll take a nap and you can pick up the ice and water on your way back.". My girlfriend gave me the green light...I knew there was a reason I wanted to keep her around So without any hesistation I headed down to the Sherman Oaks Galleria to pickup an iPhone from the Apple store.

I walked into the Apple store to see about 50 - 60 people inside all looking at the vast array of Apple products, from the iPhone to iPods to iMacs to Macbooks, accessories for all of the above and getting help with their Apple questions. It took me about 10 minutes to get a Apple associate that was able to help me. He asked if I had gone through the pre-approval process, to which I told him no. He directed me over to a station, where I filled in info like name, address, social security, blood type, organ donor, etc and waited for it to come back with an answer. I swear I sat looking at that little spinning icon for a good 3 minutes for it came back saying "congratulations!". The associate came back to me, asked me which model I wanted and then went into the backroom to find the phone I requested.

Upon returning he had the 32GB iPhone 3GS in white in hand. Just what I wanted. I added in a white Incase Slider as well as the Incase Power Slider. I've skipped on the screen protector for now, I'll wait to see how it holds up. I am going to add insurance to the phone, but Apple only offers the AppleCare that basically covers battery replacement for 2 years, and that's about it. Assurion throught ATT will not insure the iPhone ( probably because of the cost to replace the thing ) so I have found a site called SquareTrade that has a great reputation for iPhone insurance. As I was going through the steps with the Apple associate, he suddenly says ok, there I just need you to sign here and the phone is all yours. My heart sank. I needed a specific area code so that I could port my TMobile number over on August 2nd. I explained the issue to him. He said I'd have to call ATT to see if they could assist me. Needless to say, at this point I was reconsidering my purchase, but the phone had been activated and I had it in hand and was headed back to my car.

As soon as I was in my car I called ATT to try to remedy the situation. I was connected with a rep by the name of Amber Wright ( I believe that was her last name ). After explaining my situation, she said she was unsure she would be able to address all my concerns, but she needed to put me on hold and she would get back to me in a minute or two. After a minute on hold she returned. I think I was actually holding my breath awaiting her answer. She said she would be able to fix everything and we could get started right then. She was able to quickly change my number to an 805 area code phone number and said when I was ready to port my number, just to call in and it would be taken care of. I was on the phone for about 15 minutes when she said the process was done and that she was going to call me back to make sure the number change was successful. We hung up and I waited. 30 seconds later my phone rings, I answer and there was the rep saying everything was looking good. I was so very pleased.

I headed back to the house and put away the ice and the water that I picked up at the store. I put the drinks in the cooler with some ice, and opened up a water while I played around with my iPhone. It only had about 30% charge, so I knew I was going to have to charge it soon, but that I wouldn't have time to get a full charge out of it. I got it connecting to my sisters wireless network flawlessly, and installed the following apps: Facebook, AIM, Shazam, Fandango and Mobile Google. I also setup my email account which is my on domain hosted by Google Apps, and that setup was very easy. It took me all of a minute to have it working and I was getting email from my realtor and sending messages back and forth with easy.

I let the battery charge until people showed up and I think it got up to about 85% or so. Though the rest of the day I took a few pictures, I took a few videos, sent some texts, sent some emails, had a few more phone calls. Everything was quite easy on the phone. The call clarity has been superb, even when talking to my sister who is currently in Mexico. Once the BBQ started I really didn't mess with my phone much, it was in my pocket and I brought it out to show a YouTube link of my sister's dog on a skateboard, and to answer a few emails, but no heavy usage by any means. By end of the night when everyone left ( 4am btw ), the iPhone was back down to about 20%. I wasn't surprised, but wasn't impressed either. I plugged the phone in and went crashed face down on the bed.

Around 10 am the phone was pretty well charged ( it was at 97% ) and I pulled it from the charger for the day. As of this writing, the "Time since last full charge" reads:
Usage: 3 hours 19 minutes
Standby 5 hours 11 minutes
31 minutes call time
Cellular Data Sent: 173KB
Cellular Data Received: 2.8MB

and the battery is now at 36%. I do have my screen dimmed quite a bit, with the control probably around 35% or so with Auto-Brightness enabled for when I am outdoors it makes the screen brighter, but when in a dark area the screen is dimmer and in theory should save battery.

Tomorrow will be my real battery test, with time at work, and then the Incubus concert later that evening. I'll post a follow up then.

With all the things I like about the phone, what is it that I would like to see improved?

Well, last night I was attempting to take a picture of my sisters bulldog Violet, unfortuantely there was such little light out that it was pretty much impossible, even with the new macro abilities of the iPhone. A few friends had different phones, 2 with the Palm Pre and 1 with a Blackberry. The Pre's and the Blackberry both have a flash, which at that moment I really would have liked the iPhone to have. Granted this is a very specific situation and not something I expect to come up much.

Second, multi-tasking. While it's not a HUGE deal to go to one app to do some things, close the app, go to something else and back again, having the ability to just swipe to an already running app like they mobile safari swipes to different pages, would be nice. I know the iPhone doesn't support this really, and it's FAR from a deal breaker for me, but it would be "nice".

Finally, the keyboard is going to take some getting used to. More I guess is the inconsistency with apps that do or do not support landscape entry mode. AIM is an example of an app that doesn't support landscape mode, like the Messaging app does. Typing on a onscreen keyboard in portrait mode is a little difficult for my larger than average fingers, where in landscape it's considerably more natural feeling. I do also have to learn to trust the auto correction features of the phone. It has been pretty spot on with the suggested corrections but hitting the space bar to trigger the filling in of the auto-corrected word wasn't the mot inutitive feature for me to pick up.

Well, that's 24 hours with the phone, I'll update again at the end of my first week.

Early this morning I did something that I have been dreading for a long while: I called Sprint to see when I qualified to get a new phone. Why did I dread this you ask? Well, I knew once I was able to get a new phone that I'd impatiently wait until I broke down and go buy a Pre. Here are some of my initial thoughts. This is in no way comprehensive nor unbiased; it's just what I think after playing with the phone for 8 hours, but if you don't agree with me then you're wrong.

First an overview. The Pre uses a "card" for each actively running program. You can switch between cards at any time by hitting the center button. When you're looking at the screen, the programs all look like cards, so it's not that much of a stretch to call them that. The point of these is to easily switch between programs without needing to close any.

Hit the jump for a few thoughts on specific features and for more of my literary witticism.

Keyboard

They changed the layout of the keyboard from the Treo/Centro, and in my opinion it's an improvement. The comma and period are now primary buttons, and there's a [Sym] key that brings up a list of commonly used symbols so you don't have put in a symbol that you think looks like the one you want and then hit the [alt] key to see if you won the prize. If you've used a treo/centro then you know what I mean. I've seen a few people complain about the size of the keys, but I've gotten used to the Centro ones and are no longer an issue. The thing I don't like about the keyboard though is its thinness. The part that you hold is fairly thin and makes it tough to grip the phone properly, especially in one-handed operation.

5-Way Button/Gestures

Psyche! They killed the 5-way button and they killed it good. That little button opened up a myriad of directions you could move something, be it the screen or a text cursor. And by myriad I mean 4. So of course the Pre improved on this by adding something way cooler, right? Yep, they added a single button to the screen. That doesn't select things. Wow was that anticlimactic. Well, they've brought back the gesture pad from the old Palm V days, if that makes you feel any better. Probably the most useful part of that is the "back" gesture, which takes you back a screen, pretty self-explanatory. The "flick" gesture, in which you push cards off the screen is actually pretty neat, makes me feel like I'm in The Minority Report, but with less creepy kids chained up.It allows you to quickly push cards up and off the screen, effectively closing the program.

I have a theory that that "center" button that doesn't really do anything except bring up all your cards was originally intended to be like the Blackberry Curve's roller ball, but Palm ran out of either time or money. Look for them to do something cool with it in the future. That's a threat, by the way, Palm.

Oh, say you wanted to move your cursor in a text field but didn't want to erase everything you've typed since the spot you needed to edit? They have a solution for that! Hold down the alt(orange) key and slide your finger on the screen in the direction you want to move it. It now takes 2 hand (or 1 incredibly skilled one) to move the freakin' cursor. Needless to say, the Konami Code just got a lot more hard. Just the way I like it.

UPDATE: Apparently if you type in [upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart] in the launcher it brings up developer mode where you can connect a computer running the Palm SDK and get access to the phone. Huh. Guess I'm psychic after all.

Synergy

The Synergy system of the Pre synchronizes all of your contacts (and calendars) into one place, whether they be from Facebook, Google, Outlook, or your phone. This can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how close you are to your Facebook friends. If you've clicked [accept] to every invitation from slobbering teenagers who think the hot girl in the profile picture is you and not your fiancee (and your name happens to be Dana), you're probably not going to like Synergy much. See, there's currently no way to select which contacts you import into your phone, they're all there. For me this was fine since I had to recreate my Facebook profile after college so all those people who you had classes with but don't talk to anymore don't really apply.

One of the cooler things I've found with Synergy is the ability to have a conversation with a person via SMS, AIM, GoogleTalk, whatever, and it recognizes that person as the same and records it all as one conversation so you don't have to hunt between AIM convos and text messages for the address of the party that you weren't really invited to but are going anyway. That'll show them!

Battery

So far the battery life has been a bit dismal, but that is likely due to the fact that I've stayed signed into AIM, received emails as soon as they came in, watched a few YouTube videos, and had an hour-long conversation, most of it using a bluetooth headset. Oh, I also took a few pictures of my cat. He didn't like them though so I had to delete them. However, I fully charged it before I left work, and 5 hours later, the battery is at 11%. I'm hoping that after a few battery cycles I'll get a bit more life, but if not, I'll just have to either have a charger at home and one at work or else cut down on the amount of things running at any one time.

More to come later.

OutSync is a small little Windows application that is used to pull the pictures from your Facebook friends and apply that to the matching contacts in Outlook.

*Note: I have blurred the bulk of my contacts names, pictures and information for their privacy.

You can download OutSync from the link above, and installing is quick and painless. The first time you launch OutSync, it can take a minute or so to even show up. While you may think you misclicked or perhaps think the app didn't launch, give it a minute or two depending on the speed of your machine before you get too impatient.

Once OutSync is up and running you'll see a window like this prompting you to login with your Facebook credentials:

Once you have logged in OutSync will start pulling your friends list ( this can take a while depending on internet connection speed and number of friends ):

Once that's done you should see something like this:

This window lets you check off contacts that you want to sync and ones that you don't want to. The only difficulty I had was that contacts in Outlook and in Facebook have to match EXACTLY. So, if your friend on Facebook displays a middle initial or their entire middle name, you have to have it like that in Outlook for the match to be made. I'd like to see the ability to "link" a Facebook profile with an Outlook contact as well, without the name having to be a perfect match, but maybe that's a future enhancement.

Once you have selected the contacts that you want to sync you press the "Sync" button and the screen will change to something like:

Followed by:

Once that is done you can open up Outlook and see that the matched contacts do indeed have pictures now:

If you have an iPhone that syncs to Outlook or a Windows Mobile phone where you can use ActiveSync, you can easily then sync your Outlook contacts to your phone.
