Scribus – Open Source Desktop Publishing
Scribus is an Open Source alternative to Microsoft Publisher, Quark, and Adobe Pagemaker. Obviously not quite as powerful as it's competitors, but a lot less expensive!
Two New Categories
We're adding two new categories to the site (fine, you don't care, but bear with me)
Internet Phenomena and Free Software
After having to introduce one friend to Cheezburgers and another to Chocolate Rain, I realized that not everyone is a huge internet dork. Therefore, I am taking it upon myself to educate those who have been unfortunately insulated from the awesomeness that are internet memes.
From time to time I stumble upon free software programs that are incredibly useful and generally retain 90% of the functionality of the program that they seek to replace. I'm mainly focusing on windows-based programs (Windows is the only program that isn't open source on my computer, other than games of course). I had a single post about it a while back, but I decided that this would make it easier to find.
By the way, if you find something that would fall into either of these categories, send it my way! dana [@] phasetoground [dot] com
Blender – Open-Source 3D Modeling
While searching for a free equivalent to Lightwave or 3D Studio Max, I stumbled on Blender. It's somewhat of a pain in the butt to learn how to use, but there is a lot of help on the websites, plus it's FREE! Let me know what you think.
